Batman: Arkham City Review

When it was released back in 2009, the original Batman: Arkham Asylum was a mega surprise hit, and changed the game when it came to licensed game quality. And while some of my other editors might not have it enjoyed as much, I personally thought that it was one of the best games in a year filled with Uncharted 2′s and Borderlands’. Well, now the sequel has been released, and I’m happy to say that developer Rocksteady has changed the game once again. Despite some technical problems, I have found my leading pick for Game of the Year, in a year full of Uncharted 3′s and Skyrim’s.  [Read more...]

Terra Nova – “Genesis” Review

"Seriously guys, we should stop posing and get inside before the dinosaurs get us."

Ever since Lost went off the air, television stations have been trying to find a new “weird, nerdy show” to attract social bottom feeders like yours truly. FOX has already had some moderate success with Fringe, but they do need an ace-in-the-hole in case it doesn’t do too well and gets canceled in its fourth season (spoiler alert: it might). So, FOX went ahead and greenlit Terra Nova, produced by the almighty Steven Spielberg. But can Terra Nova fill in the hole left by JJ Abrams’ magnum opus?

A Delayed Second Edition of The Editors Recommend

Due to the acclaims (re: lack of hate mail) that the first edition of TER garnered, we have decided to put forth another round of musical recommendations for you the readers (slightly delayed; our apologies). Enjoy!

Cayci Phillips

Song: Zombie Barricades

Artist: The Company Band

Description: If you enjoy hard, ass kicking rock & roll as much as yours truly, there’s no reason to live your life without ever hearing this song. Or any of their sings, for that matter. Seriously. I wouldn’t steer you wrong.

Matthew Milewski

Song: Four Part Plan (Portal 2 OST)

Composer: Mike Morasky

Description: I was pleasantly surprised by Portal 2′s shockingly good soundtrack, and even more so when I heard this excellent final boss theme. The fast-paced nature of the battle against your insane antagonist is perfectly complicated by the eclectic nature of this track. I also like how a lot of things are happening in this song, much like the surrounding battle.

Evan Tognotti

Song: The Life and Times of the Clerkenwell Kid

Artist: The Real Tuesday Weld

Description: A good starting point for one of my favorite modern bands. They’re known for laying electronica beats over more classically jazz melodies, an interesting sound that you should give a listen. If you want to hear more of The Real Tuesday Weld, get their excellent album “I, Lucifer” or listen to the music that plays over the credits of L.A. Noire.

Ryan McGinley

Song: Hotel California

Artist: The Eagles

Description: A classic song, and if you haven’t heard it, you are doing yourself a huge disservice.

Nicholas Clement

Song: Woman

Artist: Wolfmother

Description: Wolfmother has become one of my up and coming favorite bands. With their catchy rifts and genral harkening back to classic rock, Wolfmother instantly captures the listeners attention. I can’t recommend these guys enough, whether it be the intro guitar rift that imediatly pulls you in, or Andrew Stockdale’s grainy, almost whinny vocals that manage to fit the intrumental, these guys will have you hooked from beginning to end.

The Editors Recommend – Week 1

Let it never be said that we are cynical bastards that don’t know how to enjoy ourselves. Ergo, we listen to a lot of music, and it’s safe to assume that you do too. So some of us editors have gotten together and put forth some musical recommendations, based on our own tastes. Enjoy!

Evan Tognotti

Song: Into the Mystic

Artist: Van Morrison

Description: An oldie but a goodie. If you have somehow been deprived of the genius that is Van Morrison, do yourself a favor and take a listen to the best track off his stellar album “Moondance”.

Matthew Milewski

Song: Lacrimosa (Dead Space 2 OST)

Composed by: Jason Graves

Description:Despite being a terrifying game, Dead Space 2 sure has a beautiful soundtrack. This piece keeps the string quartet charecteristic of much of the soundtrack, but injects more of a minimalist, somber tone into the piece. 4:58 on is my favorite part. Stick around for the surprise at the end.

Ryan McGinley

Song: Never Forget

Artist: Dropkick Murphys

Description: Never Forget by Dropkick Murphys is one of my favorite songs because growing up in a large Irish family I was and still am close with my family, and this song is performed with almost every member of the band singing, even if they aren’t singers, just to symbolize how close their family is within the band. It is a short song but it runs down a small list of some situations modern families could be in and just encourages them to stay a family, and a lot of punk rock type songs don’t really touch on this message so it is interesting how the Dropkick Murphys do this. The music is done very well too, with Irish instruments flowing into modern rock instruments. All in all it is just a great song to me and deserves a listen by anyone who hasn’t heard it yet.

Will Keane

Song: The Suburbs

Artist: Arcade Fire

Description: Arcade Fire is one of my favorite bands of all time, and The Suburbs is one of the main reasons. The song starts off almost jaunty, with a light acoustic part over a piano and drum. But you quickly realize that this is a reflection back on growing up, dreams, and what happens when they don’t come true. This is truly one of the morose songs I have ever heard, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Cayci Phillips

Song: Alexthemia

Artist: Anderblin

Description: Not a single artist out there has touched my soul the way Anberlin has. With a sound so uniquely theirs, any comparison to another is utterly transparent. Any of their six albums are excellent, but I personally suggest Cities, which is the album this song is debut.

Freddy Krueger Announced as Mortal Kombat DLC

The first Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1984, but in all that time, the series’ iconic Freddy Krueger has never had a deserving video game adaptation. Nether Realms Studios is looking to change that by making him the most recent addition to Mortal Kombat. Krueger becomes the first Non-MK character to become downloadable; he joins fighters Rain, Kenshi, and Skarlet.

It should be noted that this is the version of Krueger from the 2010 version of Nightmare, so if that movie turned you off to the character, or you prefer the classic Robert Englund version more, I’m afraid you’re out of luck. But if you’re looking for a cool new fighter in the vein of Scorpion, you’ll find it here. The Freddy Krueger Character DLC drops on the Playstation Network and Xbox Live on August 9th.

Is Capcom preparing to unleash a SUPER edition of Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

If rumors are to be believed, Capcom is preparing to unveil a new edition of its hit fighter Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at this year’s Comic-Con event in San Diego. According to Comic blog The Quarter Bin, Capcom producer Ryota Niitsuma will announce a sub-sequel called Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at the Capcom panel on July 23. In the tradition of Super Street Fighter IV, which released last April, the game will ship with all the original content, plus additional content, for less than the price of the original. How did it work out for Capcom with Super Street Fighter IV?

The game sold over 250,000 copies after its first four days. So even the grumblings of the original buyers couldn’t stop it from becoming a mega hit. Will Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 be as successful? Who knows? We’ll have more information after the press conference.

Black Ops: Annihilation for PS3 has Release Date

Treyarch announced the release date for the Annihilation map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops on the Playstation 3 and PC. The package will release on July 28, and although no price was given, it’s safe to assume that it will cost $15, given that the other map packs have cost the same amount.  Annihilation has been available for the Xbox 360 since June 28, meaning that 360 owners have the advantage of a solid month over their PS3 brethren.

Via G4TV.com

The pack includes four multiplayer maps and a new Zombies map. The competitive maps are: Drive-In, Hangar 18 (solid Megadeath reference, Treyarch), Silo, and Hazard. The new Zombies map is called Shangri-La and has a jungle theme, complete with spike traps and adorable monkeys.

If you need more Call of Duty in your life, and you absolutely can’t wait for Modern Warfare 3, and you don’t have a 360, it would probably be in the best interest of you and the safety of those around you to pick this up when it plops on the 28. If not…I guess Skyrim’s pretty close to being released, eh?
